Vintage girl
Believe it or not, this gorgeous girl is not a professional model. She’s actually a slightly shy, self-conscious high schooler. This is what I love about working with adolescents. My view of a teenager upon meeting them is always radically different from the view I have of them through the lens. Their hesitance and self-consciousness give way to portraits that reveal a natural beauty that they themselves don’t seem entirely aware of.

I don’t think I even need to explain why I love this picture so much. But I will: the gummy smile, the wispy soft hair, and most importantly, the love and joy just radiating from the two subjects. ‘Nuff said.
Photo of the Week
This is another photograph that highlights the use of natural lighting indoors. I use a flash when necessary, but if at all possible, I prefer to use plain ol’ sunshine. We were sitting in a room with darkly painted walls that served as an appropriate background for this particular subject, an old friend of mine. We were chatting when I noticed the light coming in from a window to his right side, and the way he was sitting reflected his personality and strength. I asked him to stay just as he was while I quickly retrieved my camera from the other room (I *always* carry my camera with me, just in case I come across an opportunity like this!). While this is not a true candid, it is an informal portrait that looks quite natural.

This is my favorite photograph of the week, of my daughter sitting in a laundry basket:
I was just about to take the memory card out of my camera to upload some photos to my computer when I noticed my daughter wrapping herself up in a blanket and sitting in a laundry basket. It was late afternoon and the sun was going down, but there was just enough light coming in through the window to allow me to take this without using flash. Her hair is messy and she’s not wearing fancy clothes (or any clothes at all!) and it doesn’t matter one bit: all you see is her playfully sweet expression.
